Geotechnical Engineering/Sinkhole & Foundation Investigations

Sinkhole and subsidence

Sinkhole and Foundation Investigations in Florida

Cracks that keep growing, doors that stop closing, a depression in the yard, a slab that drops. In Florida's karst country these are questions about the ground, and they need an engineer who understands both the soil and the structure.

The investigation

Ground first, then the building

Sinkhole activity and ordinary settlement can look the same from the living room. The difference is underground, and that is where the investigation starts: the site, the soils, the groundwater and the limestone beneath, then the structure and how it has responded.

What we do

  • A site and structure assessment by a licensed Professional Engineer: crack mapping, floor elevation survey, drainage and site conditions.
  • A testing programme sized to the question: borings, cone penetration tests and ground-penetrating radar where it adds information, with the geotechnical interpretation in-house.
  • Coordination with a Florida professional geologist where a sinkhole determination is required.
  • A written report with the cause, the findings and the foundation recommendations, and a repair design when the structure needs one.

Insurance claims

Florida's sinkhole statute places sinkhole testing and the written report in the hands of a professional engineer and a professional geologist, who perform the tests they judge sufficient and certify the findings. We prepare our reports to that standard, so an insurer, an adjuster or an attorney can rely on them.
